How to Confirm SSD 'DeFrag' is Enabled

Windows 7 and 8 automatically run 'defrag' on spinning hard drives through it's Optimize Drive feature. However, running 'defrag' on an SSD (drive) actually reduces the life of the drive. Fortunately, Windows provides a TRIM Command feature that is enabled when an SSD is installed in a laptop or PC.. Per the literature. TRIM actually extends the life of an SSD.

To confirm this feature is enabled on your SSD hard drive use the following:
1. Open Command Prompt with Administrative privileges (Run as administrator)
2. Enter the command "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify"
3. If the result is '0' TRIM is enabled.

Windows 8 - Add Website Tile to Start Page

You add preferred web pages as Tiles to the Windows 8 Start Page. Here's how: First, Open Internet Explorer from the Start Home page and type in the URL address of the desired web page. Next, in the top right corner of the screen click on the Tools 'gear' icon. Then, scroll down and click 'Add site to Start Screen.  Finally, locate the new Tile on the Start page and drag it to the location desired. If you want to modify the name of the new Tile, right click the Tile > at the bottom of the screen click on Open File Location and simply edit the highlighted Program name as desired.

Windows 8 Start Menu Options

Several friends and client have commented they do not like the new Start look and feel of Windows 8. Yes, I too was somewhat confused between what I was comfortable with and what the new Windows operating system offers. However, after only one week, I have to say "I am quite OK with the new system and everyday I spend 5 - 10 minutes with it, I am becoming more comfortable". Below are two options to simulate a return to a more comfortable - more familiar look of Windows 7 ... but I suggest first you take an hour or two and locate 'Windows 8 tutorials, How to Use Windows 8, and similar keyword searches on the web and just watch and learn. The two (not reviewed) options are discussed in this PC World Win 8 Start Menu programs link.

Tip: Windows 8 Refresh Button

Where did F5 go? On the Toshiba laptop F5 enables/disables cursor. However CTRL +R works fine and Right Click page also refreshes page (at least in Chrome).
